Axis II Project

The original Axis 50 exceeded our expectations when it came to 3D or “Freestyle” performance.  As well as it performed, there were a number of areas that we felt could be improved upon.  As one area of the design was adjusted to meet a higher level of performance, other areas were impacted.  As a result, a complete redesign and retooling of the Axis 50 has been undertaken.  The following are the steps being taken to prepare the new Axis 50 for production.  The new Axis 5o is now the Axis II SR.  As we progress, photos and some explanation will be posted here.

First, the old design was adjusted on Adobe Illustrator and printed out on plain paper. This was done for both the fuse and the airfoil templates.

The airfoil templates.  The Axis II employs the SB96V airfoil.  This choice allows for all of the positive characteristics of the semi-symmetrical airfoil while providing good lift.

Once the paper templates were spray glued to the template surface, rough cuts were made.  Next, the fuse sides were clamped together and the edges were sanded.

Redesigned Axis II fuse (prior to shaping).  Wing was moved up and tail boom was thickened.  Also, the fuse was lengthened by 5” and the distance between the tail section and the main wing was also lengthened.
